ERC Starting Grants to Filipa Sousa and Jilian Petersen

27.07.2018

Two young researchers at the Faculty of Lifesciences have received the ERC Starting Grant: Filipa Sousa focuses on the subject of bioenergetics and ecology of microorganisms. Jilian Petersen investigates animal-microbe interactions in the deep sea and economically important coastal ecosystems worldwide.

"The aim of the project 'Evolution of physiology: the link between Earth and Life' is to find out how microorganisms such as archaea can make energy available for metabolic processes and how these processes evolved in the course of geological development", says Filipa Sousa, from the Archaea Biology and Ecogenomics Division. Jilian Petersen, Assistant Professor at the Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science, has received the ERC Starting Grant for her project "400 Million Years of Symbiosis: Host-Microbe Interactions in Marine Lucinid Clams from Past to Present". The goal is to better understand how animals and bacteria evolved together in evolution and find each other in a complex environment. [read more]
